Nike Brings the 'Gamechanger' to Léogâne
- Friday, 25 March 2011 09:53
Nike in collaboration with Waves for Water, the philanthropic organization supported by Hurley International (subsidiary of Nike), presented the Gamechanger Bucket—a container, which provides access to both clean water and sport.
It has been estimated that 60% of Haitians don't have access to clean drinking water. The nation does not have a public water system and is classified as having the worst water ranking out of 147 countries in the world. In October, a cholera epidemic exploded when MINUSTAH soldiers introduced the disease to the country's water supply.
The Gamechanger Bucket, which is a plastic portable 5-gallon container, that includes a water filter, which can provide safe clean water for 100 people for at least 5 years. It includes a tarp and rope also for collecting rain water.
The Gamechanger Bucket offers the bare essentials in critical cases when water is needed but it also includes a sport element—a deflated soccer ball, cones to mark a field and a ball pump. Sport and play is often therapy for those facing dramatic circumstances.
The first 30 kits were given away by Waves for Water back in fall 2010 to two small communities in Léogâne, which was the epicenter in the quake.
