BETHESDA, USA - "The kid goes to Haiti the week of the US Open? He is either out of his mind or he is a great kid and I think I know which one he is," were the comments from another Irish golfer, now US TV commentator, David Feherty.
The comments by David Feherty were in regards to the "kid", Rory McIlroy, 22, and his upcoming US Open golf tournament and it was following his Master's meltdown in which in the final round after leading for 63 holes he failed to finish.
Last week, ahead of the Open, McIlroy went down to Haiti, with UNICEF, to meet kids and take in the Haitian experience. McIlroy is young and most young people can easily lose focus, which is perhaps what Feherty was concerned about, but McIlroy saw it as a good experience.
Upon returning from Haiti his new twitter avatar was of him with the Haitian children he met on the trip. He would later say:
"Haiti was a great experience for me and it was great to go down with UNICEF and see all the work that they’re doing with funding and helping build schools and maternity clinics and providing food and water for people down there. It’s still a country in a very bad state, but it’s definitely going in the right direction. It’s great to see."
Rory McIlroy won the US Open in stunning fashion. He was 16 strokes below par and 8 strokes ahead of 2nd place, when it was all said and done and is now being revered as the next Tiger Woods.
A final tweet from the new US Open champ as he left Haiti: "My trip to Haiti is coming to an end. Was incredible to see the work UNICEF do here and more importantly the great spirit the Haitian people have. With the new president and the positivity of the people a little help could go a long way in this country!"
