Haiti: Health Minister says AIDS Leading Cause of Death

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - Health Minister Gabriel Timothée said on Thursday that acquired immune deficiency syndrome, better known as AIDS, was currently the leading cause of death in Haiti.

Conforme Prensa Latina, the Minister of Health said there are more than 200,000 people living with the disease and infant mortality is increasing given the number of children infected with this disease and at least 25,000 children are orphaned by the disease.

Minister Timothée said some progress is being made as a general understanding of the risks of disease is being made and there are improvements in the behavior of infected people.

He also called on Haitians to participate on Sunday in a set of activities aimed at informing and preventing people about the risks of HIV.

Numbers: In 2009, there were 7,100 deaths by AIDS in Haiti. Comparatively, deaths by the Cholera outbreak which began in October of 2010 reached 7,100 in April 2012.
