The housing project was financed with $30 million [US] from the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) as one of the Haitian government, through the Interim Haiti Recovery Commission (IHRC) projects.
President Michel Martelly was on hand to welcome the opening of the community that he, former Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive and former U.S. President Bill Clinton helped lay the first stone for in July 2011.
A second phase, which will include 600 housing units, is planned in the town of Fort Liberte, with a third envisioned for the southern portion of the country.
The homes are not free; they are subsidized rentals. The community’s new residents were previously living as refugees in temporary housing. “You have to see every house as an opportunity to improve the conditions of each family,” said Eduardo Almeida, the IDB’s representative in Haiti.
