Haiti: No Carnival in Port-au-Prince, At All

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - Port-au-Prince is deprived of carnival festivities this year. The three days of fat are being celebrated in the third largest city, Les Cayes, where tens of thousands of people gathered since last Sunday. The streets of the Capital city are somber without parades, musical bands and hundreds of thousands of carnival-goers.

The mayor of the capital has discharged the responsibility to organize a parade through the streets of the capital for lack of means. Mayor Jean Yves Jason said his administration would not engage in formally organizing the carnival in Port-au-Prince for not having received any funding or loans from central government for the festivities in Port-au-Prince, Haiti Press Network reported.

However, the administration of mayor promises to set up units to support various groups and musical bands wishing to perform disguised entertainment during three days of fat.

The traditional “rara†bands have promised to the people dancing in the streets of downtown Port-au-Prince.

The mayor of Port-au-Prince said in a statement that the steps taken with the Haitian government and the private sector to collect the $ 50 million provided for organizing the carnival in Port-au-Prince were unsuccessful.

Therefore, the mayor Jason invites musical, disguised bands and DJs eager to parade for Mardi Gras to inform the administration of the city hall that will provide them with support units.
