Venezuela National Assembly Passes Agriculture, Health Bill for Haiti

CARACAS, Venezuela (defend.ht) - Venezuela's National Assembly passed a bill on Thursday called the "Strengthening Agriculture and Health in Haiti Act" intended to assist Haiti in overcoming dependence on imports through the development of family farming.

The program passed during a Thursday August 9 regular session, is in cooperation with Argentina and as declared by the Vice Chairman of the Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs, Jesus Cepeda, it reflects the intention of South American countries to give operational support to Haiti.

The agreement is based on four fundamental understanding signed in the 70's, 80's and 2000's with Haiti. The Office of the Venezuelan Asamblea Nacional said in its press note that Haiti showed high levels of poverty and ill health which range from 50 to 60% and ranks last in the list of Human Development by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) established in 1965.

The assembly added that it is estimated that over 70% of the population lives in poverty, a fact that carries consequences of malnutrition and other physical ailments. The Venezuelan parliament ultimately deduced that for these and other reasons, the lawmakers discussed and debated in plenary session on each of the points that includes the program of cooperation.
