PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - An appearance by President Michel Martelly at Electricite d'Haiti, to oversee the progress of an improving policy for Haiti's energy, turned from a discourse regarding energy in Haiti to a political and verbal lambasting by the Head of State.
President Martelly mentioned the allegations of corruption launched against himself and family and fired back at critics of the Permanent Electoral Council and recent actions by the General Directorate of Taxes to prohibit travel by businessmen allegedly in arrears.
"EDH is a company that had so much money that it was used as an ATM for the Haitian state. Anything that these guys wanted to do they would come to EDH because EDH had so much money. They used EDH to go an have coup d'etat or do other things."
"Today there are no coup d'etats, there are no other things. There is a driver that wants to lead the country towards development."
President Michel Martelly seemingly took shots at businessman André Apaid Jr. who announced on Wednesday in an open letter to the president that he would pursue a lawsuit against the Martelly government. Apaid was intercepted at the international airport on Monday and prohibited from traveling abroad due to unpaid taxes.
Apaid is best known for leading a coup d'etat that ousted former President Jean Bertrand Aristide in 2004.
"On the subjects of taxes. You can't say because someone is of bad behavior that you won't pay your taxes."
"Let me tell you. What are you aiming for when you manifest? So that the state can give you service. With what will the state give you service? The state must have money in order to provide services."
The Overall Visit
During this visit, President Martelly, showed concern for the proper functioning of the public service institution in discussions with the Director General, Ms. Andress Appolon, Deputy Director General, Mr. Raphael Dukens, Technical Director, Mr. Wilson Selony, the Director of Planning, Mr. Alix Dominique Alexis, Chief Financial Officer, Ms. Jean B. The President has called for a new dynamic in his vision of Electricite d'Haiti, noting that this institution was strong and prosperous time. "With the new team at the EDH, we mark a new milestone in the energy sector," said the Head of State, who believes in the ability and willingness to allow new leaders to the ED'H to regain what it meant that there are approximately 25 years.
Martelly called for drastic measures to be taken against those who interfere in one way or another, with the proper functioning of ED'H and against all those who receive a salary for which they do nothing, while the population continues to wait for results.
