India Presents Check for $5 Million for Housing to Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - President Michel Martelly received, on behalf of Haiti, a $5 million presentation check to build houses in Haiti from the Ambassador of India to Cuba on Monday at a ceremony in the National Palace.

Indian Ambassador Shri C. Rajasekhar, who has residence in Havana, Cuba discussed with the Head of State the possibility of cooperation in agriculture, housing, education and family planning.
President Martelly assured the representative from India that the check would be used to build 300 homes for vulnerable populations and those who are still living in tents.
The Minister of Foreign and Religious Affairs, Pierre Richard Casimir, was present and thanked the Government of India for the aid. The Head of State commended India for its support in the aftermath of the earthquake of January 12, 2010 as well as its contribution of troops to the United Nations Stabilization Mission (MINUSTAH) peacekeeping force.
A note from the Presidency says that Martelly expressed his desire that the Indian Government provide non-reciprocal, preferential access to import products from Haiti to India. Martelly also discussed considerations of an official visit of the Indian Head of State to Haiti.
