Haiti: President and PM Have Working Lunch on Energy and Credit

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - On Monday President Martelly held a working lunch with the Prime Minister and Presidents of the National Assembly to discuss solutions to the energy problem and giving more access to credit to the Haitian people.
Tuesday, August 14, 2012: The President of the Republic, His Excellency Mr. Michel Joseph Martelly, and Prime Minister, Laurent Salvador Lamothe, had a successful working lunch around several topics of national interest, this Monday, August 13, 2012, at the National Palace. Speakers of the Senate and House of Deputies, Simon Dieuseul Desras and Levaillant Louis-Jeune, participated in some discussions.
The Head of State and Head of Government have addressed, among others, issues related to energy and access to credit, two fundamental points on which President Martelly has placed great emphasis on, determined to take concrete action to address the context life of the Haitian people.
"Today, the new debate is committed to provide solutions to address the issue of energy and allow Haitians to have access to credit," said the President of the Republic.
Access to electricity will be the agenda at the next Council of Ministers during which major provisions will be announced in the public interest.
"I realize that there are dark and scary streets. The electric current is not completely available, while the state subsidizes this sector to the tune of $ 200 million per year. You should know what we do with this money," said the Head of State who has already sent instructions to the Prime Minister to arrange a meeting with stakeholders in the goal of finding a lasting solution to this problem.
The energy issue is a priority for the Martelly/Lamothe Administration. $11.2 million dollars have already been injected as part of an energy policy. The Prime Minister informed that 7,000 street lights are installed in the communal sections throughout the country.
Besides the energy problem, lack of access to credit is a major obstacle on which the President of the Republic wants handled. The Head of State announced he will call shortly on commercial banks in their credit policy to have a social vision for improving the living conditions of the poorest people. He advocates a public/private partnership designed to enable the middle class to have access to credit.
"Every citizen should have access to credit, this should not only concern a small group of people," stressed the Head of State, urging commercial banks to cooperate in this regard.
Indicating their willingness to continue to lay the foundations for sustainable development in the country, the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister do not intend to stop halfway in their commitment to improve the lives of every Haitian.
