Haiti: President's Motorcade involved in Traffic Accident

MILOT, Haiti (defend.ht) - Six died and 15 were injured early Thursday morning on Route National #1 toward Montrouis. In a separate incident, seven persons of the Presidential motorcade, escorting President Michel Martelly to Milot were involved in an accident.

President Michel Martelly was not harmed in what is being reported as a traffic accident involving the presidential motorcade and a motorist on a four-wheeler. According to the Spokesman of the National Palace, Lucien Jura, speaking on Radio Kiskeya saying that it was during the return from a presentation by the Minister of Tourism Stephanie Villedroun at the historic La Citadelle.

The Deparmental Delegate of the North, Yvon Alteon, a member of the president's security attaché and three others National Palace representatives were taken to the hospital for their injuries.

As well, a young girl of six years of age who was nearby was hurt and taken along with the others to the Sacred Hearts Hospital in the area.

The event is so far being said to have developed when a motorist on a Polaris four-wheeler made contact with the motorcade. Not much more is being said.

Port-au-Prince, Friday, July 20, 2012: The Office of Communication of the Presidency informs the general public that the 6 year old girl and the Divisional Delegate of the North, respectively victims of neglect and multiple frontal wounds of the road accident occurred Thursday in Milot, continue to receive needed intensive care in the capital. Their health is practically stable.

In many different hospitals, doctors are at the bedside of the four team members of the Presidency, also injured in the accident that took place after the visit of President of the Republic, His Excellency Mr. Michel Joseph Martelly travelled to La Citadel of King Henri Christophe.

Medical diagnosis revealed the following injuries on these four people: fracture below the humerus fractures in the right arm, broken nose and head trauma and fractures of the knee.

"What happened to these people, especially the 6 year old girl, touched me deeply. I am sorry that this accident could have occurred. I firmly believe that the victims will recover quickly, " said the Head of State who, approaching every day of his fellow citizens, demand that all wounded are treated with dignity.

The Office of Communication of the Presidency wishes to clarify that the President did take all steps to ensure that the injured receive all appropriate care and that families of victims are properly supported. The public and the press will be kept informed of developments.

On Route National 1

The Thursday morning accident was more fatal. Six dead and 15 injured was toll of the accident on Route Nationale 1 in the area of Montrouis.

The accident occurred at about 10 am when a bust from Port-au-Prince blew a tire and struck another vehicle.

Four died immediately at the scene, two more took their last breath later.
