PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - Survivors of the January 12, 2010 earthquake that had been living on Place Boyer in Petion-Ville were relocated on Tuesday by Mayor Claire Lydie Parent.
Mayor Parent said "a total of 20,000 gourdes ($500 [US]) were delivered to each family and the construction of temporary shelters have been conducted at the place of some other families who have a space provided for this purpose."
Tents were crushed in the circumstances. For the refugees, they held a dim view of the initiative undertaken by the mayor.
Mayor Parent was accompanied by Mr. Luc Ondoua, who was responsible for the relocation projects of Saint Pierre and will be responsible for the relocation at Boyer along with other municipal officials and some police officers of the brigade UDMO.
"The tents that we crushed are nothing more than tents abandoned long ago. People have had noise that the process of relocation is underway, they came back to take advantage of the situation," said the mayor.
According to Luc Ondoua, nearly 722 families were identified and relocated to different areas of the capital. He also wanted to move forward on the process of refugee resettlement places and Saint Pierre Boyer.
About 600,000 are estimated to be living in tents around Port-au-Prince.
