Appointing a Prime Minister Talks with the President Begin

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - President Michel Martelly had, on Monday, two days after his inauguration, a "courtesy meeting" with the Presidents of the Senate, Rodolphe Joazile, and the Chamber of Deputies, Saurel Jacinthe.

The President had this conversation that is likely to be the starting point for consultations for the appointment of the new Prime Minister while a close collaborator of the Head of State confirmed the nomination of Daniel Gérard Rouzier.

Martelly's Chief of Staff, Thierry Mayard Paul, indeed told the Associated Press that the President had made his choice on Mr. Rouzier due to his "history as an accomplished entrepreneur."

Advisor of the new Haitian Leader, that he has known for a long time, the businessman is the CEO of Sun Auto vehicles and E-Power, a group with private capital operating in the electricity market.

Publicized at the investiture of last Saturday, Daniel Rouzier, economist by profession and very close to the Catholic Church, is also the honorary consul for Jamaica at Port-au-Prince.

"The meeting (between Mr. Martelly and parliamentarians) took place in an atmosphere of fraternity and usability", informs a press release from the Office of communication of the Presidency which specifies with Mr. Joazile and Mr. Jacinthe "hot topics in the news have been addressed" without however revealing their nature.

"The President took advantage of this opportunity to congratulate parliamentarians of their spirit of openness and their determination to work together", indicates the release, while stressing that the discussions led to "no conclusion", announces upcoming meetings.

The two houses of Parliament where the party under the banner of which Michel Martelly was elected, Repons Peyizan, has only three representatives, must approve an eventual Rouzier appointment to the post of Prime Minister so that he could proceed with the formation of his Government.

Post-quake reconstruction process, the Prime Minister must also work with the Special Envoy of the United Nations Head, Bill Clinton, on the controversial interim Commission for the reconstruction of Haiti (CIRH); created in the aftermath of the disaster on 12 January, causing 300,000 deaths and severely affected the infrastructure and the economy of the country.

At the last Council of Ministers led by former President René Preval, 48 hours before his departure, his Prime Minister, Jean-Max Bellerive, and all the cabinet members had submitted their resignation.

However, the resigning Government will continue to the current affairs until the arrival of the next leadership.
