Haiti: Senators Vote to Ratify Laurent Lamothe 19 Yeas, 3 Nays and 1 Abstention

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - On Tuesday April 10, the Senate of the Republic of Haiti voted to ratify the designated Prime Minister of President Michel Martelly, Laurent Lamothe.

Laurent Lamothe will next have to achieve a majority vote in the lower house, the Chamber of Deputies of the Republic of Haiti on a date that is still to be determined.

The discussions on ratification centered on the nationality of Laurent Lamothe, his residency and record of paying taxes.

Two commission reports were submitted and presented before the members of the upper house on Tuesday. The committee analyzing the documents submitted by the Prime Minister-designate recommended to ratify the Laurent Lamothe as prime minister. The committee on nationality recommended to not ratify the prime minister-designate based on nationality, residency and tax records.

The next time the prime minister-designate will be before the senate for a vote will be for the declaration of policy.
