Haiti: Senators to Begin Investigation into Nationality of Government Officials

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - The senate commission tasked with investigating alleged foreign citizenship of several high-ranking members of the government including President Michel Martelly, should start its work next week.
Senator Moïse Jean-Charles (Nord/Inite), a member of the commission, said by Tuesday the nine members should meet in order to structure their commission, appointing its chairman and secretary.
The parliament at the initiative of the establishment of the commission, said that, based on information it claims to have obtain, in addition to President Michel Martelly, there are at least three members of the government who have dual nationality.
Senator Jean-Charles said that in order to proceed rapidly, the nine members of the commission will be divided into several sub-committees, each of which having specific members of the government that it must verify citizenship.
According to Jean-Charles it was a long fight to establish the commission and he will fight harder to have the report accepted by the national assembly.
Senator Francois Anick Joseph (Artibonite/AAA), said that he awaited the members of the special commission to make recommendations to make recommendations according to the Constitution if it is proven that members hold foreign nationality.
