Haiti: Mexican President Calderon to visit Haiti Thursday

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - The appointed Prime Minister and Foreign minister resigned, Laurent Lamothe, has officially announced Tuesday the visit to Haiti of Mexican President Felipe Calderon April 12 and ongoing support of $20 million of Mexico.

Felipe Calderon will be hosted in Port-au-Prince by Haitian President Michel Martelly, Laurent Lamothe said. The number one Mexican will be accompanied by a large delegation including a dozen of his ministers and Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim.

It will be a "historic" visit, according to Lamothe, announcing a donation of $20 million from Mexico.

This gift is split between the construction of the hospital in Gonaives ($8 million) and the granting of 300 scholarships worth a total of $12 million, said the minister resigned.

Martelly, in U.S. for a shoulder surgery, will return early on April 12, before departing Friday, April 13 for the Summit of the Americas to be held on 14 and 15 of this month in Cartagena in Colombia.

Felipe Calderon, who must also take part in this event, will leave Haiti on the evening of April 12.
