03.04.2013: Ministers Laleau and Godefroy press conference on postal incident with Deputy Belizaire on TeleMetropole
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - During a press conference, the former Director of the Post Offices of Haiti, Regine Godefroy, denied the allegations of Deputy Arnel Belizaire who said she embezzled 700,000 HTG as director of the institution. As well, the Minister of Commerce and Industry Wilson Laleau announced a letter was sent to the Chamber of Deputies requesting actions be taken against the deputy for an incident that occurred a week prior.
Deputy Belizaire said Godefroy, now the Minister of Communication, diverted 700,000 HTG ($16,867 [US]) as director of the Post Offices of Haiti but did not provide much detail.
For her part, Minister Godefroy denied the claim by saying when she was appointed Director of OPH, the institution had already incurred a debt of 15 million HTG ($361,446 [US]) and when she left, that debt was ($72,289 [US]). She also said that all postal employees had received their pay during her tenure and that given these facts it would not be possible for her to have embezzled money.
The Minister of Commerce and Industry, Wilson Laleau, said it was a grave incident that which occurred at the nation's post office on February 27, 2013. Minister Laleau said that there is nothing that the administration can do but to write the Chamber of Deputies, who he believes want peace in the country, that they may put sanctions on the deputy of Delmas and Tabarre.
In a security video made public Saturday morning, Deputy Belizaire is seen in discussion with postal workers wanting something from the post office. A portly and shorter postal worker attempted to stop the deputy from entering a back room when he kicked the door and shoved the man out of his way. About 20 minutes later, Deputy Belizaire is seen leaving with an envelope in his hands.
Since the incident, Belizaire had not commented in detail about what had occurred except for the accusation of embezzlement against Minister Godefroy.
