Haiti: PM Commits to 4-Year Reform Project of National Police Force

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht/PdH) - Saturday, June 30, 2012: Prime Minister, His Excellency Mr. Laurent Salvador Lamothe, participated on Friday, June 29, at the National Palace, a high-level meeting of the National Police of Haiti under the authority of the President of the Republic His Excellency Mr. Joseph Michel Martelly. The purpose of the meeting was firstly to evaluate the professionalization of the police institution and the other to find new ways of cooperation and leadership for its sustainable capacity.
This meeting was held with the participation, of among others, members of the: government, parliament, command of the PNH, diplomatic corps, and UN Mission for Stabilization in Haiti (MINUSTAH).
On this occasion the President of the Republic had pledged to support any initiative to strengthen the capacity of the PNH in performing its mission. In this sense, he sent formal instructions to the Superior Council of the National Police (CSPN) so that everything is done to improve the security of the entire national territory. To this end, the Prime Minister pledged to draw upon all his government without delay to carry out the instructions of the Head of State.
Moreover, it was proposed to create a joint commission to monitor this important seat. Thus, the CSPN to be responsible for defining the terms of reference of this ad hoc structure at its next regular meeting.
The Head of Government, His Excellency Mr. Laurent Salvador Lamothe in his capacity as Chairman of the Supreme Council of the National Police, said he expected that at the high-level meeting a clear perspective on the implementation of the reform of the PNH for the next four years.
Finally, the Martelly/Lamothe government in its desire to revitalize the police force, reiterated faith over its determination to accompany it in its long march toward efficiency and autonomy.
