Solar Street Lamps Bring Light to the Town of Léogâne, Haiti

LEOGANE, Haiti (defend.ht) - The people of Léogâne who met with the Minister of the Interior, Thierry Mayard-Paul in March, had some of their grievances answered on Wednesday when 10 solar powered street lights with a life expectancy of 4 years were installed at strategic sites throughout the community.

Thursday, June 7, 2012: As part of the continuing decentralization program "Katye Pa'm Poze" implemented by the Minister of Interior and Territorial Communities, Thierry Mayard-Paul, a 10 solar-powered streetlights were established in the town of Léogâne Wednesday, June 6, 2012. This approach directly addresses the grievances of the people who gathered in the "Community Cafe" on Friday, March 30, 2012.

Four strategic sites were selected for the installation of this first of a series of projects:
- at the entrance to the city
- at Saint Rose Place
- the "Route Nine" Station
- and at the Darbonne Marketplace.

Each location is equipped with at least two lamp posts built to withstand hurricanes and equipped with a rechargeable solar powered battery with a life of four years.

Citizen security is a priority of the Ministry of Interior, the night lighting of public spaces will facilitate the activities of the inhabitants of the area, giving a better look at the city and reduce the rate of insecurity in the region.

The program "Katye Pa'm Poze" launched since March 2012 by the Interior Minister aims to be a real engine of national development and decentralization.

This achievement in Léogâne is the first in a series of actions to be undertaken together with people in communities across the country.

KPP gives voice to the people to support the central government in decision making. The Ministry of Interior and Local Authorities work to increase local and international cooperation to provide concrete and positive changes to achieve the vision of President of the Republic which is sustainable development for the country.
