Haiti: Community restaurant opens in Arcahaie

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - The Minister of Social Affairs and Labour, Jean-Jacques Charles, inaugurated the first community restaurant in Arcahaie, on May 18, that will serve free hot meals for 500 persons everyday from Monday through Friday. Days earlier a mobile clinic was established which provided treatment for 270 residents.

Haiti: Senate discovers more irregularities in Education Tax

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - More than 60% of the funds collected on international calls for the National Fund for Education have been spent, not on education in Haiti, but in manners “irregular” according to a report by an investigating committee that is to be presented before the Senate. The investigation also says of the possibility of 20% of monies collected are not being reported.

Haiti: Finance Commission established to stabilize exchange rate

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - On Tuesday the exchange rate of the Haitian gourde to the U.S. dollar was set at 44 HTG to 1 USD, signaling a steady decline in the past 13 months. Minister Wilson Laleau said a commission would be established to address the situation and stabilize the rate.

Haiti: Finance Minister confirms $419 million [US] projected deficit for 2013 fiscal year

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - Minister of Economy and Finance Wilson Laleau confirmed the information from Senator Jocelerme Privert who said that there would be a $419 million [US] deficit in the 2013 budget. But Minister Laleau was unable to provide any actions that the government would take to address the problem.

Haiti Treasury: Projected deficit of $419 million [US] for 2013 fiscal year

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - The Chairman of the Senate Economy and Finance Committee Jocelerme Privert indicated on Monday of a trend towards a $419 million [US] deficit in the state's accounts for the 2013 fiscal year. Senator Privert urged the authorities to intensify their pursuit of taxes and fight against smuggling and for the Martelly administration to be more responsible with the state's limited financial resources.
