Sandy retired from names used for Atlantic storms

GENEVA, Switzerland (defend.ht) - The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) announced Friday that it will retire the name "Sandy" from the official list of names used for naming tropical cyclones and/or hurricanes. The name Sandy had hit a threshold of death and destruction in the fall of 2012 warranting the retirement.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - National and international reports this week say that malnutrition and hunger is becoming more severe in Haiti since the passage of the fall 2012 storms. $125 million [US] in agriculture losses were recorded and the Martelly administration has not provided explanation on the uses of $120 million [US] in state of emergency funding following the storms.

Solenodon found in the Dominican Republic

EL SEIBO, Dominican Republic (defend.ht) - A male specimen of solenodon, native to the island of Haiti that was thought to be extinct until 2005, was found in the Dominican Republic on Sunday in the captivity of a woman. The animal was turned over to the conservation and science department to be examined by researchers and experts on the species, the Dominican Ministry of the Environment said.

CAP-HAITIEN, Haiti (defend.ht) - At least 16 people were killed by floods in Cap-Haitien resulting from heavy rain in northern Haiti. The people in the north complain of not receiving any advanced warning from Haitian officials of inclimate weather.
