Haiti: Start of School Year Pushed Back to October 1st

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - The official opening of the 2012 school year, as in 2011, was pushed back a month to the first Monday in October for better preparation.
After meeting with his Minister of Finance, Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe informed the population they would receive an extra month to prepare for the school year, pushing the start of classes to October 1st.
The National Palace released a statement saying "this delay will enable the Presidency, donors and all other stakeholders to be better prepared for school, given the current political situation."
No further details were given but on the twitter account of President Michel Martelly a Week of Agriculture was announced for the coming days. Prime Minister Lamothe spoke of three job-creation projects that will affect several regions of the country in the same time frame.
The 2012 school year is the second of back-to-back school years that the Martelly administration has begun the school year a month later than what was usual.
The government has made education one of its top priorities since taking over in May 2011.
