PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - Haitian artist, Philippe Dodard, known nationally and internationally for his incredible artwork has become the Director of the National School of Arts (ENARTS).
Dodard will replace the jazz saxophonist, Turgo Théodat. According to the artist, Mr. Dodard has already been installed as the head of the institution founded in the 80s.
Himself out of the ENARTS, Philippe Dodard, designer , painter, sculptor, has had an interesting journey as a contemporary painter of Haiti.
Philippe Dodard was born in 1954 Port-au-Prince. By the age of 12 he had won his first prize while attending the Junior Seminary of St. Martial College 1966. Since then, his name has headlined on almost all catalogs of major world exhibitions that include Haitian art.
He studied thereafter at the PotoMitan Art School with Jean-Claude "Tiga" Garoute, Patrick Vilaire and Frido Casimir. At 19 years old he would enter the Academy of Fine Arts and work as a layout artist until he would found his own studio of audiovisual graphic arts.
At 24 he received a scholarship to the International School in Bordeaux, enabling him to specialize in Pedagogic Graphic Design, learning how to make teachers of art.
Two years later he received a scholarship from the Rotary International Foundation and left on tour with the Group Study Exchange of Haiti to give conferences on Haitian culture.
His artwork has evolved to include large sculptures, fine iron works and fine jewelry design. Donna Karan's Spring/Summer 2012 line was inspired by the artist.
In his speech, the Minister of Culture, Pierre Raymond Dumas, recognized the need to link talent with training. If we are to believe the minister, speaking in Creole: "With Philippe Dodard at the head of the ENARTS, some expectations can be met."
