Haiti-Immigration: Brazil allows 245 Haitian families

BRASILA, Brazil (defend.ht)-245 Haitian families in irregular status were finally authorized to enter on the Brazilian territory. Our compatriots were blocked at the border between Peru and Brazil, from January 15, 2012, in the small Peruvian town of Iñapari.

The Brazilian Ambassador in Peru announced this news last week and made it official. The diplomat stated that this decision had been taken for humanitarian reasons and to prevent human trafficking in the area.

The Peruvian authorities had indicated recently that our countrymen, among them women and children, were living in critical conditions. Most of them were supported by the local parish, where the Catholic Church has accommodated a certain number in its premises, while the Catholic community has ensured their food and that others were in a refugee camp established by the regional government.

Our compatriots sometimes pay up to 3,200 U.S. dollars to smugglers to organize their trip from Haiti to Brazil.
