North Miami Library dedicates wing to Desiline Victor

NORTH MIAMI (FL), USA (defend.ht) - Already inducted into the North Miami Hall of Fame, sitting in the First Lady balcony during U.S. President Obama's State of the Union and being the main subject in new legislation for voting law, now the North Miami Public Library has dedicated a wing of its building in honor of the 102-year old Haitian-American, Desiline Victor, who waited for hours to cast her ballot last year for president of the United States.

PETITE-RIVIERE, Haiti (defend.ht) - Restoration of Palace of 365 Doors in Petite-Riviere, Artibonite is to begin on Tuesday with the disbursement of funds from Petrocaribe. This palace was built but unfinished by King Henri Christophe in 1820 and served as the offices of the National Security Volunteers (VSN), Tonton Macoutes, in the 1960s.

567 Haitians deported from D.R. in April

OUANAMINTHE, Haiti (defend.ht) - The Border Network of Jeannot Success (RFJS) reported that 567 Haitians were deported from the Dominican Republic in the month of April. 498 men, 67 women and 2 children who may not have been afforded due process. These people were left at the border by Dominican authorities, added the network defending human rights.

JILAP Haiti Report: At least 230 deaths by gunfire between January, March 2013

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - The Justice and Peace Commission (JILAP) reported 296 violent deaths in Port-au-Prince from the months of January to March 2013. 230 of these deaths were by gun violence the commission reported in its 46th report on violence in the metropolitan area.

Violent clashes in Grand Goave after attack on interim Mayor

GRAND GOAVE, Haiti (defend.ht) - On Wednesday, heavily armed men attacked the private residence of the interim Mayor of Grand Goave, who replaced the previous interim-mayor who was killed by the machetes of unidentified individuals. Since this attack, the city has been a war zone with road blockades of burning tires and gun shots from local militias.

Rumor sets Gonaïves on fire

GONAIVES, Haiti (defend.ht) - The town of Gonaïves was hot this week in violent protest because of a rumor that had gotten out of hand. Gonaiviens heard that a taxi driver had been killed at the hands of a police officer for not having insurance or a current tag for his vehicle. The City of Independence did not stand for that but would later learn that the information had not been accurate.

The Patriotic Force for Respect of the Constitution (FOPARK) announced a mobilization to accompany former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide to the Port-au-Prince courthouse on Wednesday May 8 that will "demonstrate the power that Lavalas has in the territory." This mobilization, according to FOPARK officials will be the start of the Lavalas campaign in the upcoming elections.

HPN Poll: Haitians in North America lukewarm towards Martelly, Lamothe

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - A poll of Haitians living in the United States and Canada found that 52% preferred President Michel Martelly as president to 40% for Rene Preval. A pretty tempered result considering the individuals sampled did not live in Haiti and Martelly was a famous musician named "Sweet Micky" who traveled throughout the U.S. and Canada, while Rene Preval was a rarely outspoken president barely seen in the public eye.
