Haitian Mobile Telephone Carrier Haïtel Off

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - Less than a week after its sequestration by the Haitian government, the mobile phone company HAITEL no longer works but no announcement was been made to its customers.

The news was learned by the Haiti Press Network, which found that no calls can be made on the network for quite some days.

A government lawyer said the sequester did not involve a permanent cessation of services but only the continued management of the company by the State to ensure the preservation of rights and interests of all parties.

"For nearly a month bankruptcy was seen by the employees who have not received their salaries and some services were already suspended " a source close to the company told HPN.

Recall that the company Digicel had just acquired the company Voila. With the closure of HAITEL, Digicel controls about 80% of the market and the Haitian government and Haitel, most of the rest.
