Haitian Senior Goes Mad at Toussaint Louverture Int'l Airport
- Monday, January 09, 2012 6:16 PM
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) – At the beginning of the year, a 63-year old Haitian passenger, after a trip to Haiti for the holidays was on his way back to the United States when he went mad at the Toussaint Louverture International Airport. His American Airlines flight was delayed, a common occurrence in P-au-P, but was more to the passenger.
In his wrath, he denounced bad treatment to Haitians passengers from both Haitian air transport authorities and American Airlines. A video showing the scene at the airport was uploaded to YouTube. Here’s what he said:
“Haitians like us don’t have any respect for us. We have to put ourselves together. When we get at the airport, let's stand in the line; be disciplined, like the White man, then they will respect us."
"They don’t have to tell us to call as we may know if the plane will arrive or not. They have to tell us themselves what’s happening."
"For if it was a White man, they would tell him themselves, and a shuttle would come and take him to the hotel (…). We don't know our rights. I’m tired of all this”, he said to the other passengers watching the scene."
“Now I’m 63. When will I see a change? My children and grandchildren have come here, and what they see is such a mess! Tomorrow morning they will go to school, and they take the plane at this time! They would never do this to a White man."
“Now it’s time for us to stand together so they may respect us” concluded the old man while other passengers were complaining also about the bad treatment to Haitians from some airlines companies and Haitian air transport authorities."
Reactions on Facebook
On facebook, young Haitians respected what the man in the video had to say but revealed to each other that American Airlines is known for delaying flights out of Haiti for up to twelve (12) hours regularly.
On such comment was this:
"Haitians laugh where they should cry and cry where they should laugh. Some people find this funny...I don't. Because i know AA couldn't do it here without paying some major fines. Ask Jet Blue how much they've paid in fine for stranding people for a few hours. We're talking about being stranded for 1/2 a day! It's funny to some people I guess because they never travel since they left Haiti on that boat...but you'd be pissed too. The man is right. Haiti doesn't have consumer protection laws, that's why AA doesn't give a rat's ass"
This comment was backed up by another gentlemen, also on facebook:
"Haitians, speak up! Stand up! He is telling the truth. Those companies do not respect us."
"Where are the Haitian law firms? Are they only here to help those in jail getting out?"
"We, Haitians, do not understand the importance of Haitian lawyers in our country. We often hear of Haitian licensed attorneys when there is a land dispute or someone has stolen somebody else cows or mule."
"If we could get together and press a class action suit against companies like AA and other airliners, they would have long shown some respect. The same apply against the many Non-Haitian Non-Governmental Organization (NHNGOs), which have consciously chosen to bypass the Haitian government to maximally profit from the aids that were destined to help us."
"With just a few exceptions that we have, nearly all of the 10,000+ NHNGOs are in Haiti for their economic gain."
A more mature woman on facebook left this response:
"That happen all the time.I went to Haiti in 1997.On my way back, the flight was for 12pm,but came at 1Am in the morning.I spent 12hrs in the airport,no air conditioner, toilets not working,no food.At the time, the airport was closed.Once you go in,you cannot get out.AA gave us a dry sandwich around 6pm.There was no apology from any one. That was my last trip to Haiti, mind you,I love to travel.I can imagine his frustration."
