Louis Farrakhan Ends 5-Day Tour through Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan ended his five-day pilgrimage to the first free nation in the western hemisphere, Haiti, on Thursday.

Upon leaving the leader of the Nation of Islam pledged solidarity with the Haitian people noting the misfortunes endured and challenges faced in the international community for being the first black republic in history.

Minister Farrakhan devoted his time in Haiti to reconstruction, scholarship and unity.

In reconstruction the minister wanted to assess areas where the Nation of Islam could further build in the country and see how an earlier water purification project had been operating. Back in the summer, the Nation of Islam donated $150,000.00[US] and working with Ezili Danto and the Haitian Lawyers Leadership Network, it was able to realize a 30,000 gallon-per-day system. The three systems are part of Nation's aims to fight a cholera outbreak that began more than a year and has killed more than 6,500.

The minister sought for a better understanding of Vodou and the African ancestral culture that he sees as a powerful force that enabled the slaves of Haiti to revolt and succeed in taking over a territory.

For unity, Minister Farrakhan visited the different sectors of the Haitian state. He spent time in the audience of Senate President Jean Rodolphe Joazile (Nord-Est/Alternative) and with members of the House of Deputies. Farrakhan was received by the President of the Republic, Michel Martelly, where the two sat and explored the work of their respective constituencies.

The Haitian government welcomed and appreciated the visit of Farrakhan providing security and transportation within the country. Minister Farrakhan returns to Chicago, Thursday. Before Haiti, Farrakhan has spent days visiting the people of Jamaica.
