KOKOMO, USA (defend.ht) - A church service in Indiana, USA was special for members of the Oakbrook Church who relived the experience of surviving an ambush by armed gunmen while on mission in Haiti.
The missionaries said they never imagined that they would be attacked and that they are thankful to be alive, RTV6's Myrt Price reported.
Morgan Young, one of the missionaries, said the ambush began when one of the missionaries, asleep on the patio, awoke to six men pointing guns to his head.
"(In Haiti) you're just in overwhelming odds. You’ve got guys breaking windows, trying to rush the door. They've got guns and they're firing on you,” Young said.
Young said the other missionaries heard the commotion and rushed to help.
"Somehow, Bruce Donaldson was able to fight off these six guys,” Young said. "It’s completely dark because there's no power on, and they have a flashlight that they keep shining through the windows, and guns are firing. Shots are now coming through the door. Some of our guys start getting shot, they cry out, ‘I'm shot, I'm shot!’ So as they're shot, blood is going everywhere."
At one point, the gunfire stopped and the missionaries thought the attack was over.
“One of our guys jumped out of a two-story window and scaled two large gates. Then he ran a fourth of a mile in his bare feet to get help. The guys who came as soon as they got close, they started firing warning shots and yelling for police,” Young said.
Despite the attack, Young said he hopes to continue his mission work in Haiti.
“The people (in Haiti) are wonderful. How the Haitian people in that village responded to us after we got back from being in the hospital in Port-au-Prince, was one of the most moving things I've ever seen," Young said.
