Carlos Gimenez, the Mayor of Miami-Dade accompanied by the County Commissioner Jean Monestime, first Haitian-American elected to the County Commission in 2010, is in Haiti for 48 hours, in order to toughen exchanges and trade between the Miami-Dade County and Haiti.

During his stay, the Mayor shall meet with representatives of the Embassy of the United States, the Ministers of Planning and Foreign Affairs. An agreement should be signed between the Miami International Airport and the Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince to promote the traffic of freight and passengers between the two airports.

In that vein, MIA officials will provide technical and logistic support to their counterparts in Haiti and the two sides will share information, including statistical data, marketing research and plans for airport infrastructure.

“For me personally, it’s my first visit to Haiti,’’ Gimenez said. “With the large number of Haitian-Americans we have living in Miami-Dade, I think it is important that I see what the conditions are there and how we can help them.’’

Gimenez and Monestime will meet with business leaders in Port-au-Prince.
