Kansas Man Gets World's Richest Mine in Haiti
- Friday, July 05, 1889 10:26 PM
FORT SCOTT, USA - John Forbes, a Kansan, who recently returned from the West Indies, today received from the United States Government a concession to coal lands which he discovered in Haiti, and which are said to be the richest in the world.
The coal strata are 33 feet thick. They are situated close to the Windward Passage, where the ships of all nations will have to pass and repass as soon as the Nicaraguan canal is built.
"Coal can be shipped from our concession," said Mr. Forbes tonight, "to New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and other seacoast towns much cheaper than from Pittsburg."
