As of 8 a.m. EST Wednesday, the storm had reached a maximum sustained winds of 115 miles per hour and moving slowly, west-northwest at 9 miles per hour.
The National Planning for Risk Management and Disaster (PNGRD) center lowered Haiti's threat alert from Red to Orange on Wednesday saying the coasts of Haiti are no longer in direct threat of the storm. The center warned the southeastern Bahamas of a direct and strengthened engagement.
Computer models have Irene hitting North Carolina's Outer Banks with slight disagreement on whether the system will actually make landfall or just ride the coast. Riding the coast would still pose a significant threat to residents up and down the seaboard.
