This distinction, one of the highest in Canada, recognizes the work of a lifetime, the outstanding commitment of a person to the community and an extraordinary contribution to the nation.

Dr. Fouron, a leader in pediatric cardiology, is known to have used the technique of Doppler ultrasound to examine fetus heart problems.

He founded the first unit of fetal cardiology in Canada, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Sainte-Justine. Professor at the University of Montreal, he was a mentor to several generations of pediatricians while engaging in training in pediatric and perinatal medicine in Haiti.

His various researches have earned him many national and international awards including the Order of Quebec.

The Order of Canada (Ordre du Canada) is a Canadian national order, admission into which is, within the system of orders, decorations, and medals of Canada, the second highest honour for merit. It comes second only to membership in the Order of Merit, which is within the personal gift of Canada's monarch.
