PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - Prime Minister Garry Conille, in line with his recent push to take more responsibility for his government, announced his intention to begin weekly lectures to inform the public of its activities.
The prime minister, ratified in October, intends to establish a "large information center" that will aim to coordinate communication between the offices of various ministries and allow journalists to easily find information about the government.
The former managing official for the United Nations visited several media agencies throughout Port-au-Prince on Monday. Accompanied by his media adviser, Jacky Cantave, Conille visited the offices of newspapers and radio stations.
The Prime Minister concluded the day by saying communication was a top priority in his declaration of general policy and that serious efforts for transparency would be made. An afternoon broadcast with Marvel Dandin of Radio Kiskeya:
The recent activities of the Prime Minister shows a willingness to play a larger role in a government mostly composed of ministers and department heads chosen by President Michel Martelly.
The prime minister was caught off guard by members of parliament in October when he was asked to a convocation on the subject of reinstating the Armed Forces of Haiti. The PM asked for a delay and since that day the Martelly-Conille government has all but scrapped plans to see a force mobilized on November 18.
Last week, Conille announced initiatives to monitor expenditures and transactions by the executive branch. It is assumed that the public would be made privy to this information.
