10 Dead and 7,000 Displaced After Heavy Rains Strike Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht)-The Haitian authorities informed that 10 people were killed during the storms of the past week. Moreover, the Direction of the Civil Protection (DPC) announced that a person is missing and more than 7,600 families are affected.

The majority of deaths were recorded while people were trying to cross flood waters, deplore the CPD officials who call Haitians to follow the safety instructions. Many areas of the slum of Cite Soleil were partially flooded. The majority of affected families are from this region said the civil protection officials.

The situation could become complicated over the next 24 hours. According to forecasts from National Meteorological Center (CNM), new rain is expected for all departments. Due to the saturation of the soil, the authorities feared flooding, landslides and rockfalls.

The authorities have not conducted an assessment of losses yet. Livestock were washed out and plantations destroyed by flooded rivers especially in the Nippes, South and West.

The departmental delegate of the West, Gonzague Day, promised distributions of food and hygiene kits to the displaced of continuing bad weather.
