Accompanied by the First Lady, Sophia Martelly, Prime Minister Garry Conille, his cabinet of ministers, parliamentarians and members of the Superior Court, in Marchand Dessalines, the president's speech focused on unity and reconciliation as he recalled the union forged by the forefathers of Haiti, Jean-Jacques Dessalines and Alexandre Petion.
"While I am speaking with you I hear a voice in my head that says 'how much better it would be if we could begin living the way things were in our first days of independence with liberty, fraternity, respect and dignity.'"
"Because I have a love for my country, a love that burns in my spirit, I want to renew my engagement so that I can bring together all the children of this country. The same way Father Dessalines brought together all the oppressed living in the country, same people he opposed he brought together to so that we can fight and gain our independence."
"...and that is why I am making visits with all past heads of state of Haiti that are living in the country, no matter what their political dispositions, because it is with 'L'Union Fait La Force' that we will be able to bring our country up..."
