Edwidge Danticat Honored with the Langston Hughes Medal

NEW YORK, USA (defend.ht) - Haitian-American author, Edwidge Danticat, was overwhelmed with emotion as she was honored with the Langston Hughes Medal, given to distinguished authors of the African diaspora.

NEW YORK, USA (defend.ht) - Haitian-American author, Edwidge Danticat, was overwhelmed with emotion as she was honored with the Langston Hughes Medal, given to distinguished authors of the African diaspora.

The ceremony at the City College of New York, was held on Friday November 18 with a morning panel discussion entitled "Haiti in the Age of Danticat."

A question and answer session allowed Danticat to talk about her newest work "Create Dangerously: The Immigrant Artist at Work".

It was that evening that the president of the college presented the writer with the 2011 Langston Hughes Medal. A very humble Danticat became emotional during the acceptance of the medal saying:

"My life, for reasons that only the universe fully understands has been one in which I always feel I am walking in the footsteps and on the shoulders of giants. Nothing that has happened in my life thus far has proven this more true than tonight."

The highly distinguished author was proud to receive the award named after an honorable author, Langston Hughes. She also recognized receiving the award on the anniversary of the Battle of Vertiéres.

The Langston Hughes Medal is awarded to highly distinguished writers from throughout the African American diaspora for their distinguished contributions to the arts and letters. Among past recipients of this award are James Baldwin, Gwendolyn Brooks, Toni Cade Bambara, Paule Marshall, Toni Morrison, Ralph W. Ellison, Alice Walker, Maya Angelou, August Wilson, Chinua Achebe, Derek Walcott, and Octavia Butler, to name a few.
