Oprah Promised Martelly to Return to Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) – Oprah Winfrey promised President Michel Martelly she would return to Haiti.

According to the Associated Press, on Tuesday, while visiting Caribbean Craft art and craft studio in Port-au-Prince, she told reporters that she “dined” with the president and First Lady, Sophia Martelly. Details of when or where the dinner took place or its duration were not given.

President Martelly had hoped Winfrey would be a goodwill ambassador for his government. He told the Associated Press on Friday that he hoped the television personality would “help us get the kind of assistance needed…” Martelly, a former musician, also shared aspirations of performing on stage with Winfrey.

"We would take the (world) tour to Los Angeles, Korea, Japan, France to raise money for the children's education..."

"I will get on it and dance and have great groups of entertainers to perform to help Haiti, including Wyclef and Oprah and have others play my music and sing my songs..."

Winfrey told reporters that no formal role was discussed but that President Martelly made her promise to return to Haiti.

No further details about what was discussed has been released by the Office of the President, First Lady or Winfrey's camp.

Oprah did attend a dinner party with Sean Penn, Donna Karen and a few dozen people on Monday evening. It is not known if this is the dinner Winfrey was referring to.
